The School of Physiotherapy at the University of Otago which is a research intensive University that holds the premier position in the New Zealand rankings, has a long history and will soon celebrate it’s centenary in 2013. Distinguished alumni of our School in the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy are Robin McKenzie, Brian Mulligan and Stanley Paris; three gentlemen that have contributed greatly to the profession and are truly World class.
The aim of the Clinical Postgraduate Programmes at the School of Physiotherapy, are to integrate research and clinical expertise to enable physiotherapists to communicate and practice effectively. Our Clinical Programmes are uniquely placed to offer postgraduate students the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and attributes under the supervision of highly qualified physiotherapists with specialised expertise. The close working relationship with other professional schools and departments within the Division of Health Sciences at the University of Otago means that we have the ability to draw on the expertise of other health professionals and scientists to contribute to these Programmes.
The School of Physiotherapy offers a number of Postgraduate Programme options in the area of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and Manipulative Physiotherapy with provision to staircase your qualifications from a Postgraduate Certificate, to Postgraduate Diploma and on to Masters level. The option to study either part time by distance or full time residential at our Dunedin campus, adds to the flexibility of the programme. Enrolment on a part-time basis in the distance learning papers will enable clinicians to continue with their professional commitments, whilst enjoying a course that develops their clinical skills and thinking through to Masters level.
The Master of Physiotherapy endorsed in Manipulative Physiotherapy is designed to advance the practical and clinical reasoning skills of physiotherapists managing patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The programmes emphasise an integrated clinical approach, using concepts and techniques from a variety of approaches to manual therapy, manipulation and exercise, underpinned by an understanding of clinical anatomy, medical specialties and other relevant disciplines.
The practical component of the course takes place in the School’s own Musculoskeletal Outpatient Clinic in a small group format, providing an ideal opportunity to facilitate the development of clinical expertise. The school's clinics are staffed by some of the country's leading physiotherapists and supported by the knowledge and skills of its academic staff. Clinical staff have diverse skills evidenced by postgraduate qualifications including Manipulative Therapy, McKenzie Method, Sports Medicine and Occupational Health; many hold a Masters degree or higher. These clinical academics provide the mentorship for the Postgraduate students.

Please note that for part time distance students some of these papers involve attending residential blocks in Dunedin

Admission information:
The minimum requirements for New Zealand trained physiotherapists to be considered for the Master of Manipulative Physiotherapy are as follows:
1) A current Annual Practicing Certificate
2) One year post-qualification clinical experience

Please note: - Students must enter the programme at Postgraduate Diploma level and gain sufficient grades before they can be admitted to the Masters.

International applicants please note: International students are required to enrol full time and obtain a Special Scope of Practice from the Physiotherapy Board prior to commencement of the course. The qualifications do not entitle overseas trained physiotherapists to practice in New Zealand.
